Lobethal
In 1841 Pastor Fritzsche and his group arrived in Port Adelaide on their ship the “Skjold”. 274 people had set sail from Prussia, 52 had died at sea.
They searched for a place to settle along the western branch of the Onkaparing River and on the 4th May 1842 in an open-air service, 18 families gathered and named the town Lobethal.
Lobethal has the oldest Lutheran church still in use in Australia. In a rare example the pulpit stands as a part of and above the altar.
In 1917 the Town was renamed Tweedvale and then changed back in 1936 for the Centenary of the State. Some of the Towns original buildings still stand; 81 Main St is a fine example as is the building opposite the bakery.
Just a few kilometers out on the Gumeracha Lobethal Rd stands a cottage in a poor condition the early method of construction can be clearly seen.
